Knowland Locke Brode


Born Feb. 14, 1890, at Annelly, Harvey County, Kansas. Born and raised on a farm. Educated in rural grade and high schools. Studied Business Administration at Bethel College; Engineering with International Correspondence School; Wilson Engineering School; Catholic University; George Washington University; Real Estate Sales and Management, Chicago.

Entered railroad work in the Engineering Department of the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Ry. Co. in 1909 at Newton, Kansas. Enlisted as a private in 32nd Engineers, U.S. Army. Served from April 2, 1918 to June 21, 1919, AEF France in construction of docks, camps and railroads. Honorably discharged as Master Engr. Entered Municipal Engineering in 1927 as Director of Public Works at Newton, Kansas. Became third City Manager of Newton, Kansas in 1931. Entered Government Service in 1941 as Chief of Control Division, Defense Projects, Office, Chief of Engineers, Washington, D.C. Transferred to Seventh Service Command, Omaha, Neb. in 1943 as Chief of Buildings and Structures on Maintenance of stations, Ill. in 1946 as Chief of Railroad Section. Returned to City Manager field in 1947. In 1948 [became] city manager of Lebanon, Mo. [From a letter in the 1970's, he was then living in Houston and claimed to be very healthy and vigorous. He died at Newton, Kansas.]
