Daniel Brode Daniel was in delicate health for some months after his birth, possibly due to overexertion by his mother, as she is reported to have traveled, largely by walking, from near Pittsburgh, Pa. to Saxton [at least 115 miles], two weeks before his birth. In later life he is reported to have had a striking appearance with his large head, broad face and abundant white hair. He had also heavy eyebrows. He was bound out for four years before he was sixteen. He was a farmer most of his life. He was not mechanically inclined. He is said to have spoken German; that may have been more common in his family than in some others as both of his parents were of German descent. |
